Join us for an immersive 2 day pottery demo workshop led by the renowned Malcolm Greenwood.Over 2 full days, you will delve into the fascinating world of high-end tableware production and learn techniques that will change your studio practice forever.

Who is Malcolm Greenwood?

Malcolm has over 47 years of working with clay. A journey which began by studying with Japanese master potter Makoto Yabe and continues today with Malcolm making his living entirely from selling his work.

Much of Malcolm’s time is now dedicated to producing custom designed and made tableware to hotels, restaurants and cafes throughout Australia, including Quay, Baillie Lodges, The Bentley Restaurant group, Masuya, Single Origin Roasters, Ormeggio, Bennelong, Bathers Pavilion, Firedoor and Gildas. Malcolm’s ongoing production work is complimented and influenced by his exhibition work.

Malcolm’s work focuses on a fusion between meditative form, elegant simplicity and aesthetic utility. His work has been featured in most of Australia’s leading design and style magazines, food magazines and in the books of several of Australia’s leading chefs.

Topics Demonstrated;

  • Wheel Throwing Techniques: Throwing and Trimming for efficiency and consistency. Japanese method for throwing off the hump, using minimal water, and creating intricate forms.
  • HandBuilding technique: Demonstrations of slab rolling and preparation as well as utilizing various types of press moulds.
  • Clay Preparation & Management techniques: Such as spiral wedging
  • Tool Making techniques: How to craft your own ribs, tombo, trimming tools, etc.
  • Plus in-depth discussions on developing efficiency, flow & tempo in the studio, glazing & firing as well as how to make a living from your work.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM

Day 1: SATURDAY

9:00 AM - 10:30 AM: Welcome and Introductions

  • Meet Malcolm Greenwood and your fellow pottery enthusiasts.
  • Overview of the workshop agenda and expectations.

10:30 AM - 12:30 PM: The Ultimate SLAB-OFF Challenge

  • Witness an exciting demo: Malcolm vs. the Slab Roller.
  • Learn how to make your own slab roller in just 5 minutes.
  • Techniques for slab preparation and press moulding.
  • Discover the art of spiral wedging.
  • Watch Malcolm create a beaker tombo, bowl tombo, and rib.

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM: Lunch and Discussion

  • Enjoy a meal while engaging in discussions about pottery and techniques. (tea & coffee provided)

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM: Slab Plate Throwing and Press Moulding

  • Observe the process of throwing a slab plate and exploring press moulding techniques.

2:30 PM - 4:30 PM: Mastering Spiral Wedging and Throwing

  • Demonstrations on throwing beakers and bowls off the hump with minimal water.
  • Learn to use the tombo for precision.
  • Watch Malcolm throw larger forms such as large bowls and blossom vases.

4:30 PM - 5:00 PM: Wrap-Up and Feedback

  • Discuss the day's activities and provide feedback.
  • Open floor for requests and additional questions.

Day 2: SUNDAY

9:00 AM - 12:30 PM: Chuck Making and Trimming Tools

  • Demonstration on creating a chuck and making trimming tools.
  • Techniques for trimming using the chuck and gauge.
  • Additional press moulding demonstrations.

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM: Lunch and Discussion

  • Another opportunity to relax and discuss pottery with Malcolm and peers. (tea & coffee provided)

1:30 PM - 3:00 PM: Advanced Trimming and Custom Requests

  • Continue mastering trimming techniques.
  • Open session for specific requests and personalized guidance.

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM: Slide Presentation and Final Wrap-Up

  • Inspiring slide presentation showcasing pottery masterpieces.
  • Reflect on the workshop, share experiences, and discuss takeaways.
